Onwards & Upwards – To Leh, Ladakh

The flight to Leh was due to depart at 5:15am, which in India time eventually equated to 5:45am. A fairly short 1 ½ hour flight, we were presented with the most spectacular Himalayan scenery (think snow-capped mountain tops in clouds) on our approach. The landing was precarious, to say the least, with our mid-sized plane having to circle around the airport 2-3 times, seeiming to just manage clearing the mountain tops before finally landing.

First impressions of Leh – sparsely populated (especially compared to the rest of India); barren desert mountain landscape; evidence of a strong Tibetan Buddhism culture everywhere;  Army presence very noticeable with posts/checkpoints dotted everywhere (close to Kashmir/Pakistan border); possible nirvana for middle-old age hippies; like stepping back in time 50 years.
